The Blue Method

I remember where I was when I first saw this.

I was chillin' at a friends house, like 10 - 15 girls and guys, drinkin', smokin' and eatin'. We were all talking and actin' a fool. Then this video came on and EVERYBODY JUST SHUT THE HELL UP AND WERE MESMERIZED FOR 4 MINUTES!!!!!!!!!!! We hadn't seen a video like this before. Black & White, shot with a wide-screen movie lense. It changed everything. Then Brandy did the same thing in her video for the remix to "I Wanna Be Down" inviting MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, and Queen Latifah. We loved Puff back then. Seems like he doesn't even care about hip-hop anymore.

Wait, I take it back. There is a "The Message" for this era...sort of. It's one of my favorite hip hop songs EVER! Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Common made a song a few years back called RESPIRATION. It dominates EVERYTHING on the radio now. EVERYTHING! PERIOD! The metaphors and similes are so abundant. And when mixed with the word-play, its just amazing to listen to and try to break down when you first start listening to it over and over. Enjoy. I will post it soon.

I was born in 1974, and when you think about Rappers' Delight...it was exactly what this is...a "down the line". You'll never hear a song like The Message again. I think you know why. A little thing I like to call...CONTROL! But don't hate on Flava in Ya Ear Remix. I know you can't get down with the profanity, but there a many reasons why this song and the accompanying video are TRUE HIP-HOP to me, and I grew up on Sugar Hill, Melle Mel, Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde, Street Beat hosted by Lady B., Kurtis Blow, Busy Bee, Spoonie Gee, Treacherous Three, Funky 4 + 1, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, UTFO, Roxanne Shante, and I can bring on up into the present, you know. Wait I can't forget my dogs...T La Rock & Jazzy Jay!!! I stopped listening to "hip-hop" that gets played on the radio, better known as rap, around 1997. There's no fun. There's no intelligence. There's only the so-called negative side. I need balance.

Funny thing, I remember thinking something had gone terribly wrong with hip-hop -- think I comforted myself with some De La Soul or Digable Planets. But then, I go back to Rappers' Delight and The Message...
