The New York Times is reporting today that gossip blogger Perez Hilton, aka Mario Lavandeira, is in "preliminary talks" about getting his own imprint at Warner Brothers Records. Although the newspaper says the talks are preliminary, they said that they had confirmation from several anonymous sources. Supposedly, Lavandeira would be paid $100,000 a year and half of the profits earned by the artists he signs. Lawyers for Lavandeira and Warner Brothers declined comment.
If this story pans out, it will be an interesting achievement by a blogger. The story says that PerezHilton.com generates 2.8 million page views each month. It could also be a sign of desperation on the part of Warner Brothers, considering the declines in music sales in the last couple of years.
Then again, it wouldn't be surprising if this kind of public disclosure killed the deal altogether, especially if the public reaction is unfavorable.
