Since I'm not an aspiring musical artist, I'm going to ask a question others may have, but might not feel confident posing.
Music Builder has members who vary in age, experience and knowledge of the industry. Could you explain what an A&R person is? There are a number of people who bandy that term about, but how can an unsigned artist tell who is genuine?
I'd be glad to Professor Kim. Thank you for the question.
According to Wikipedia -in the music industry, Artists and Repertoire (A&R) is the division of a record label company that is responsible for scouting and artist development.
Traditionally, an A&R would find and develop talent so the talent would be ready for radio and tv interviews, speaking with members of the press, fans and other music business professionals. Historically, A&R's were the gatekeepers to major record labels.
In today's new music business environment many A&R's no longer scout and develop talent. They look at charts such as Billboard, R&R and Urban Network, etc. In addition, they look at BDS Spins and Soundscan Numbers. They speak with djs to see what new artist has created a buzz. Now days A&R sign not so much on the merit of the music (great music & talent), but the merit of the numbers and street buzz/credibility.
